My Initial Trip to Venice: A Story of Two Journeys
Last September, I set out on what was meant to be a road trip encompassing multiple destinations, including Florence, Rome, and Venice. However, due to logistical hurdles, we opted to concentrate on just one city, with Venice, the place I had long dreamed of visiting, emerging as the clear choice. Although I typically plan meticulously, I made a few spontaneous choices, such as booking a stay at the Luna Baglioni hotel. Upon our arrival, a reservation mix-up led to an upgrade to the ‘Sansovino lagoon view suite,’ which provided a stunning rooftop vista, even if it didn’t directly overlook the canal.
Our first night in Venice featured a gondola ride to Da Ivo, a famous eatery reachable by gondola. Despite tales of rat-infested waters, we savored a meal of stuffed zucchini blossoms, beef carpaccio, and truffle pasta, sidestepping seafood due to the city’s aroma.
Wandering through Venice felt like navigating a maze, particularly for someone with claustrophobia. Following a difficult walking tour, we chose to shorten our stay. Our final evening included dining at Ristorante Quadri in St. Mark’s Square, though the staff’s pretentious attitude detracted from the overall experience.
Unexpectedly, I found myself back in Venice just eight months later during a road trip across Italy. This time, we resided at the Danieli, a Luxury Collection Hotel, which is set to be renovated by Four Seasons. Our brief visit was highlighted by an enjoyable dinner at Terrazza Danieli and trips to the Doges Palace and Murano glass factory. The latter provided a captivating insight into the art of glassblowing, deepening my admiration for Venice.
Despite the initial setbacks, my second journey to Venice left me with a far more favorable impression, and I eagerly anticipate returning to discover more hotels and dining options in this exceptional city.
