Seven Indie Designers Attain Renowned Awards-Season Red Carpet Spots in 2025

As we approach the end of 2025, we’re recapping the top stories Fashionista shared this year (at least according to our editors). The following was first published in March.

Even as the red carpet continues to highlight the fashion industry’s leading luxury brands — particularly during award ceremonies — independent and up-and-coming designers refuse to fade into the background.

Though smaller designers may encounter restricted resources and tight budgets, numerous indie labels still managed to shine during the 2025 awards season with prominent celebrity appearances on the red carpet: Lady Gaga was a standout in her “Mayhem”-themed Sam Lewis dress at the Grammys; Ayo Edebiri showcased her athletic flair in a Commission tracksuit-dress fusion at the Sundance Film Festival; Chloe Bailey appeared as a living artwork donning Gaurav Gupta at the NAACP Image Awards, while Andrew Kwon transformed a bridal gown into a stunning red-carpet piece for Chrissy Teigen’s Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

For an insider’s perspective on how these extraordinary moments came about, seven indie designers shared their experiences collaborating with celebrity clients and their stylists to achieve such sought-after awards-season spots, along with the significance of these successes for smaller brands.

Sheryl Lee Ralph in Sergio Hudson, 2025 SAG Awards and NAACP Creative Honors

“We maintain a wonderful relationship with Ms. Ralph and her stylist Ivy Coco; she regularly wears our designs. They aimed to convey strength while still incorporating an element of femininity, seeking styles that could narrate that theme over several evenings. I instantly thought of my Resort 2025 collection, which was greatly inspired by menswear — it was absolutely fitting.

“I am always thankful when stylists and celebrities select Sergio Hudson because I understand they have other brands to choose from that may offer financial incentives. Their decision to choose us is incredibly meaningful, allowing us to stand shoulder to shoulder with larger brands.” —Sergio Hudson

Aidy Bryant in Naya Rea, 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards

“Our partnership with Aidy began a few years ago when she bought a dress from us. Since then, we’ve had the delight of dressing Aidy on numerous occasions. Crafting a custom dress for the Film Independent Spirit Awards felt both natural and organic based on our existing relationship. Because I know Aidy and her unique style, the design process was seamless. Aidy and [her stylist] Rebecca [Grice] picked a few designs they admired, and we utilized those as a base for the dress, adding some unique details and flair.

“This is exactly what I find admirable about Aidy and Rebecca. They could have easily selected dresses from larger brands, yet they chose to support a smaller brand and allowed us this opportunity. For a little brand like ours, it means everything. It’s not just about gaining exposure, but the entire experience of creating a custom style for such a significant event is invaluable to me. I cherished every minute and it inspires me to pursue this more often in the future!” —Naya Rea

Ashley Graham in Bach Mai, 2025 Golden Globes

“Our moment at the 2025 Golden Globes with Ashley Graham was incredibly special; however, it wasn’t originally intended for the Globes red carpet! We initially crafted this custom gown for Ashley for another occasion she unfortunately didn’t attend, but she adored the gown and held
